Governor Seriake Dickson has reconstituted and inaugurated the Governing Council for the Bayelsa State owned Niger Delta University and appointed Prof. Steve Azaiki as Pro-chancellor and Chairman of the governing council.
Governor Dickson speaking at the inauguration in the Executive chambers of the Governors office, charged the council to use their wealth of experience an global network to raise the profile of the Niger Delta University in order to launch the school to an enviable position among tertiary institutions in the country.
The Governor described the NDU as a premier tertiary institution in the heart of the Ijaw Nation and having recently obtained accreditation for all her courses, maintained that the governing council must ensure that the institute under their watch become self sustaining.
According to Governor Dickson, the economic downturn in the country nation calls for institutions to become self sustaining as practiced all over the world.
His words” I expect you to work with the government to move the institution towards more sustainable means of funding. ‘Work to see how the institution will become the center for development which will create and attract funds for the running of the University as against the N500 Million spent by government to pay salaries every month”.
The Governor reiterated that the Senate building will be completed as well as the construction of the internal roads in the institution.
Responding, the Chairman of the governing board, Prof. Steve Azaiki, while commending the governor for appointing him and other members of the board said, the task ahead of them was enormous but expressed confidence and optimism in their collective ability to make the Niger Delta University a globally competitive institution of learning.
