The Bayelsa Specialist Hospital formally called government house Hospital, was commissioned and unveiled by Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, former president of Nigeria on the 16th of February 2018 on the occasion of his three day visit to Bayelsa State.

The Commissioner for health Professor Ebitimi Etebu who gave the welcome address reminded the audience about the passion of the governor to avail the public a healthcare package similar to that enjoyed by the governor himself hence the establishment of the Specialist hospital.
In his remark, the commissioner stated that what existed as the government house hospital was a mere four bedroom apartment of which Governor Dickson effected an expansion which has yielded two wings namely the VIP and Public wings.

The commissioner further stressed that the expansion made allowance for a cardio vascular unit and a stroke center. For this, he applauded the governor for coming through with his promise.
In the same vein, governor Dickson in his brief remark expressed delight at the fact that the restoration government under his watch was unveiling multiple medical facilities for the benefit of Bayelsans and the country at large.

The specialist hospital (VIP & Public) wing which were both built from scratch by the Dickson Led restoration government, was a major part of the revolutionary intervention in key areas of health care delivery which the governor christened the ‘Democratization of Health Care’.

In the Governor’s words, “What is good enough for the Governor, the Deputy and their families, is good enough for the ordinary people of Bayelsa in whose name and for whose benefit we hold offices”.
The governor further stated that both wings of the hospital contain more than a hundred beds and being managed by reputable medical teams from within and outside the country.

He used the opportunity to introduce the Oyesis group, the medical team in charge of operation and management of the specialist hospital.
While cutting the tape, the former president and special guest, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo commended the governor for making healthcare available for all in Bayelsa stating that healthcare was next to food supply.

The former president expressed delight at the statement of the governor; in his words “I thank you Mr. Governor for what you said. That whatever is good for the goose, is good for the gander; whatever is good for the VIP, is good for the ordinary citizen in whose name and for whose benefit we hold offices, this is very encouraging”.
“I have great pleasure, joy and satisfaction to commission this specialist hospital for the benefit of all those who will make use of it and to the honour and Glory of God”.

The event was concluded with the formal registration of Chief Olusegun Obasanjo as a beneficiary into the Bayelsa Health insurance Scheme, which is currently the only functional health insurance scheme in the country, having registered over 50,000 beneficiaries and still counting. The health insurance certificate was issued the following day.
